Monumental in 2021-2022, Karim Benzema has very logically been elected Player of the Year by UEFA. The Real Madrid striker is ahead of his club partner, Thibaut Courtois, and Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne.
You could have bet all your savings, you would not have lost. Without any surprise, Karim Benzema (34 years old) has been elected UEFA Player of the Year for the 2021-2022 season.
Benzema without a shadow of a doubt
It must be said that the Real Madrid striker has left no stone unturned. Best player, top scorer and second best passer in La Liga last season, the captain of the White House has been flying high in the Champions League. The best player and top scorer (15), the French international was the star of the finals, scoring two hat-tricks against Paris Saint-Germain (0-1, 3-1) in the eighth round and against Chelsea (3-1, 2-3 a.e.) in the quarter-finals, before scoring three goals, including a brace in the first leg, against Manchester City (3-4, 3-1 a.e.) in the semis. Monumental performances for the former Olympique Lyonnais player, who walked on the competition as few players have done in history. He finished far ahead of his club partner, Thibaut Courtois, author of a monumental final against Liverpool (1-0), but also ahead of Kevin De Bruyne. For the third time in a row, the Belgian midfielder of Manchester City failed to reach the podium with a third place, as in 2021, while he reached the second position in 2020.
Benzema joins Ribery.
Benzema becomes the second French player to win this title after Franck Ribery, winner in 2013. The five-time winner of the Champions League thus succeeds Jorginho, winner in 2021, and thus becomes the third player of the Casa Blanca to write his name on this trophy after Cristiano Ronaldo (2014, 2016, 2017) and Luka Modric (2018). A very good sign to make the double with the Ballon d’Or. See you on October 17 for the supreme consecration!
